KARACHI: Rs20m set aside for Darul Aman

Published September 14, 2006

KARACHI, Sept 13: The city government has allocated Rs20 million in its current budget for the development of Darul Aman (shelter home for women). In this regard, a committee has also been constituted that would carry out a complete survey and submit suggestions for making Darul Aman a model shelter home for women in the city, a city government press release stated on Wednesday.

Darul Aman was in extremely dilapidated condition when it was handed over to the city government. On the directives of Karachi Nazim, EDO Community Development Rehana Saif paid visit to Darul Aman and found that neither lady in charge was there nor any sort of medical facility was provided to female workers.

Taking note of the situation, a lady doctor has been assigned to visit Darul Aman twice a week besides provision of an ambulance. Moreover, a lady legal adviser has also been arranged to assist the women in legal matters. Two female sanitation workers and two guards were also appointed for security.

A lady tutor has been assigned to give Islamic teachings to women. It was decided that women should be trained in various skills so that after their release they could live honourable life. In this respect, sewing and stitching machines were provided to Darul Aman. The city government also arranged a refrigerator and water cooler besides painting the building of Darul Aman.—PPI
