Acute water shortage in Haripur

Published February 14, 2002

HARIPUR, Feb 13: The residents of various localities of Haripur are facing acute shortage of potable water as the underground water table has reduced to a considerable extent due to the long dry spell.

Mohalla Eidgah, Pandak, Makhan Colony, Adda Darband, Roshanabad, Malikpura and several other localities are the worst hit areas.

According to the residents, they were being supplied water from the municipal committee’s tubewells for 30 minutes a day.

“It is very difficult to manage on a short supply of water when need of the commodity can never be substituted with any other thing,” said Kamran Sohail, a resident of Mohallah Asifabad, who blasted the civic authorities for their failure to mitigate the hardships of people.

He also criticized the TMA for proposing new taxes and added that the sorry state of affairs of the civic amenities of the city speak ills of the performance of the Tehsil government.

Another complainant held the residents of his mohalla responsible for the shortage of water adding that the entire locality could enable them to manage on the available source and quantity if they develop the habit of sharing the resources honestly. “When the affluent class sucks water extra from its due share with water sucking pumps how can others who do not have such machines to receive their share”, said Waqar Swati another resident.
