HYDERABAD, Oct 20: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has urged revenue officials to complete a survey of losses of life and property suffered by people in recent heavy rains and submit a report within two weeks so that the district can start paying compensation to the affected people.

Addressing a ceremony organised by the district government at the nazim’s secretariat on Thursday to distribute 15-day ration packets among effected people, he said that the district had been in constant touch with the federal and provincial governments to get the relief packages announced by the prime minister and the chief minister.

Hyderabad had never before witnessed the devastation from the torrential rains at such a large scale still the district withstood the situation with courage and cooperation from the people and organizations.

Mr Jamil said that the district utilized all the resources at its disposal to provide relief to the rain affected people but unfortunately the volume of disaster did not match its meagre resources.

According to experts, the rains left in their wake 1.5 billion gallon water in the streets of all the three urban talukas of the district, which posed serious threat to the peoples’ lives and properties. The district acted swiftly and did its best to keep the losses at their minimum, he said.

The district prepared a phased plan to meet the pre and post challenges of the disaster. In the first phase, it completed dewatering in all the areas and in the second phase, it started a survey of losses, he said.

As soon as the second phase was completed, the district would not only start paying compensation to the victims but also undertake rehabilitation of infrastructure in the third phase.

The district government had decided to provide at least 15-day ration to each rain affected family of the district without any discrimination, he said.

Mr Jamil said that to ensure transparency in the process, the lists of the affectees had been prepared in consultation with each union council nazim.

He appreciated the cooperation from the federal and provincial governments and paid rich tributes to the nazims.
