HYDERABAD, Dec 2: A final PhD seminar was held at the National Centre of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry of the University of Sindh. Ms Farah Naz Talpur presented her dissertation on "fatty acid composition of ruminant milk, meat and diary products in Sindh".

The seminar was presided over by Sindh University vice-chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui.

Prof (Dr) Rasheeda Ali of the HEJ Research Institute also attended the seminar as subject specialist.

Prof Iqbal Bhangar and Prof (Dr) M. Y. Khuhawar were the supervisors of the research fellow.

The PhD work of the scholar was based on nutritional quality of milk, meat, and dairy fats in Sindh.

The scholar suggested that ruminants (buffalo and cow) in tropical conditions of Sindh had great potential to enhance nutritional quality by scientifically planned feeding practices as well as by breeding programmes, which thus could be used to enhance nutritional quality which was more beneficial for human health.

She said that fresh pasture, grass grazing enhanced CLA in milk and consequently in meat and dairy products.

She recommended for all dairy farmers to encourage grazing in ruminants before maturity stage of pasture, as mature pasture caused reduction in beneficial fat content possibly due to reduction in digestibility.

The researcher proposed to exploit the use of fish oil or marine organism (algae and plankton) in ruminant diets, especially in buffaloes and cows milk for the enhancement of omeg-3 fatty acids.

Initial trials may be conducted on these products, she suggested.

Breeding programme should be organised in such a way which not only produce animals with high milk yield but also with better nutritional quality of milk and meat which was the only source of CLA in our diets.

Food science expert Dr Rasheeda Ali spoke on the quality of research work and the presentation of the scholar.

She appreciated the work of the scholar and recommended her work for PhD thesis with the comments that work was not only comparable with any national university but could also be compared with international university standard.

The vice-chancellor said that our research scholars must work hard on such applied research projects for the benefit of society.

He congratulated the scholar and her supervisors for conducting a marvellous research.
