Faisalabad GCU faces faculty shortage

FAISALABAD, Dec 9: The lack of an effective system has marred the progress of the Government College University (GCU), Faisalabad, so the priority would be given to systemise routine affairs by empowering faculty deans and decentralising the authority, newly appointed GCU vice chancellor Dr Arif Zaidi told reporters at his maiden press conference on Saturday.

He criticized his predecessor, Dr Asif Iqbal, saying that he (Dr Iqbal) had no agenda that led to mismanagement in the university.

Dr Zaidi said teachers as well as students had been suffering from the shortage of academic staff, because many seats were lying vacant in the university.

“How can one deliver without having a proper faculty?” he asked, adding that the Higher Education Commission was pressing teachers for research but teachers were overburdened because of the teachers’ shortage.

He said there was no shortage of money as a sum of Rs206 million, allocated for the university, was lying unspent.

“I want to induct competent teachers by offering a handsome package and have written letters to several higher education institutions for their support,” he said and vowed to bring back those teachers who had left the university because of various reasons.

He said that no new study programme would be launched in the institution but courses already being taught would be consolidated.

Dr Zaidi that the administration would strictly check any grouping among the teachers and that their performance would be evaluated after every semester.

He said the design of the new campus had also been prepared.

Killed: A teenager killed his 12-year-old sister on Saturday in Chak 216-RB in Khurrianwala police station’s precincts, when she failed to provide him meal quickly.

Akhtar Ali, 16, asked his sister, Karam, for meal, which she provided with a quite delay. This infuriated Akhtar who opened fire, killed her instantly and fled. Police have registered a case on the complaint of Muhammad Ali, the father of both the boy and the girl.
