HYDERABAD, Jan 10: Activists of Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) staged rallies and demonstrations in Hyderabad, Shikarpur, Mirpurkhas and Nawabshah on Wednesday in protest against American bombardment in Bajaur Agency and by-elections on the National Assembly seat in Bajaur, which fell vacant after the resignation of MMA candidate Haroonur Rasheed.

In Hyderabad, JI activists held a large demonstration outside the press club, which was addressed by former city nazim of Karachi and JI’s provincial naib ameer Naimatullah Khan and other JI leaders. Mr Khan described the by-elections as a farce and condemned the killings of innocent people in Bajaur in American bombardment. Gen Pervez Musharraf was so frightened of America that instead of voicing protest over American action, he himself owned the responsibility.

He cast doubt on free and impartial elections under Gen Musharraf and said that the MMA had already launched the movement to dislodge Musharraf government.

He said that the opposition was intact and claimed that there were no differences within MMA and the alliance had unanimous opinion on the issue of resignations.

Mr. Khan alleged that Pakistan Army was being pitted against its own people and said that the rulers had mortgaged Pakistan to America.

SHIKARPUR: Activists of JI and its affiliated organisations staged a rally followed by a demonstration at Lakhi Gate Tower Chowk. JI District Ameer Maulana Mehmood Illahi Hakro, Abdul Qadir Abro and Maulana Sadaruddin Mahar led the rally.

The protesters condemned the bomb blast in JI’s meeting in Naushera on Tuesday and demanded withdrawal of anti-Islamic policies and women’s law.

Activists of Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan had also staged a rally in Hamayoon against government policies, price hike and unemployment. Pir Abdul Basit, Habibur Rehman Jamali and Hafiz Mohammad Umer Mirani led the rally.

MIRPURKHAS: JI activists staged a rally here which was led by JI Naib Ameer Dr. Mumtaz Memon.

Mr. Memon alleged that government was bent upon holding by-election in Bajaur agency after MMA leader and legislator Haroon Rasheed resigned in protest against Bajaur incident.

He said that people of Bajaur had announced they would boycott the elections but the government was busy manoeuvring to bring its favourite candidate through by-elections.
