HYDERABAD, Jan 13: The Anti-Greater Thal Canal and Kalabagh Dam Action Committee has conceded that the Thal Canal has already been constructed and water has also been released into the canal.

The committee, however, announced that in the on-going struggle, protest rallies and sit-ins will be held in Mirpurkhas and at divisional level on February 24, to evolve further strategy on this issue.

A meeting of the action committee was held at the residence of PPP leader and MPA, Syed Ali Nawaz Shah Rizvi here on Saturday.

Briefing newsmen about the decisions of the action committee, its convener, Syed Qaim Ali Shah MPA, conceded that the construction of Greater Thal Canal had been completed and 8000 cusec of water was flowing in the canal.

He said the rulers had not only ignored the protest of Sindh but had also redesigned the canal and increased its capacity to 12,000 cusec.

He said, earlier it was envisaged that the canal will irrigate 1.5 million acres of land but after its redesigning, it will irrigate 2.02 million acres.

He pointed out that although General Pervez Musharraf had announced the construction of Bhasha dam in haste but for all practical purposes, neither its feasibility report nor other requirements had been completed as yet.

He, however, made it clear that the action committee will not accept the construction of Kalabagh dam or any other controversial dam on the Indus.
