HYDERABAD, Feb 10: The release of water from Manchhar Lake into the River Indus has been stopped due to reduced quantity of water being released downstream Sukkur Barrage.

A water committee formed in the wake of release of poisonous water from the lake into the river in May 2004, which had led to the deaths of 42 people, had decided that from then on water release ratio between the lake and the river would be maintained at 1:50 (1000 of lake water to 50,000 cusec of river water) to prevent a repeat of the tragedy in future

District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil who heads the committee ordered on Friday stoppage of water from the lake due to low level of the river.
