KARACHI, Feb 11: Six-year-old bay horse King Of Sanghar established his credentials when he lowered the colours of hot favourite filly Abhi Abhi for the second consecutive time to land Jashan-e-Baharan Cup on a day of upsets in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Jockey Arshad steered King Of Sanghar to a facile five-length victory over the public fancy filly who was tipped to make amends of the previous loss.

Finishing two-and-a-half lengths away was mare Makina while another mare Savabeel completed the frame.

On the whole, it was a bad day for the punters as bookmakers had a field day with six of the seven races on card producing upset results.

Punters who have a miserable day got a sigh of relief in the concluding race when fancied five-year-old bay horse Tharkyee continued his giant killing run to post three-and-a-half lengths victory over colt Moon Raker.

This was fifth successive win of Tharkyee since the start of the year which speaks of his excellent form. The win enabled rider Arshad to complete a good back-to-back double.

In the two preceding races Tharkyee’s hot favourite stable mates — three-year-old bay colt Sir Jee and three-year-old bay filly Phapha Kutni — were edged out by outsiders.

Four-year-old dark bay filly Black Girl with Tariq Baran astride stunned Sir Jee by three-quarter-of-a-length while mare Ouija Board toppled Phapha Kutni in a photo-finish by short head.

Syed Nadeem Anwar turned out to be successful owner of the day when his two horses — The Princess Arab and Birj-ul-Arab — topped the field in the second and third races.

The former beat Lucky Leader by two-and-a-half lengths while the latter beat Smiling Face by three-quarter-of-a-length.

Earlier, the opener ended in a blaze of glory for unfancied New Ferrari who ousted joint favourite Shah Pasand by half length. Second joint favourite Queen Of Awan finished fourth. The next Gymkhana race meeting will be held on Wednesday.
