KARACHI, Feb 24: The students of a government secondary school in Lyari Town have strongly protested against the construction of a girls intermediate college on the school’s playground, saying that it would deprive them from recreational facilities.
The S.M Lyari School is one of the oldest schools in the locality and was once run by the Board of Trustees of Sindh Madarassa-tul-Isam.
The City District Government Karachi has planned to develop the school as a model institution in the town.
The head of the school when contacted said he was caught unawares when digging of the school playground was started by a government department. On his asking, he was told that the government planned to construct an intermediate girls college on the school ground.
The head said, we do not have any objection on construction of a college, but a suitable site should have been selected, not the school’s playground. He pointed out that there already exists an intermediate college for boys near the school building.
The parents of the school’s students have lodged a strong protest with the concerned authorities demanding that the school playground should not be converted into a building. They insisted that the girls college be built at some other suitable site.
