TANK, March 8: Police on Thursday arrested a suspected suicide bomber and found 20kg of explosives and two jackets in his possession, a senior police official said.

Ninteen-year-old Waheedullah, son of Alam Zeb and a cousin of fugitive militant leader Abdullah Mehsud, had been arrested at a checkpoint on the Western Circular Road at about 10.30am, District Police Officer Attiqullah Wazir told newsmen.

He said that the suspect who belonged to Nanu village of the South Waziristan Agency had been taken to Dera Ismail Khan for further interrogation.

Nanu is the native village of fugitive militant and former Guantanamo Bay detention camp detainee Abdullah Mehsud.

The police officer said that police had recovered 20 kilograms of explosives, one detonator and two jackets especially designed for suicide bombings.

He said police had received information that some elements had entered the city for terrorist activities.

Security has been tightened in the town and the adjacent South Waziristan Agency to prevent any act of terrorism during the observance of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS).

D.I. Khan Range Deputy Inspector-General of Police Masood Afridi confirmed that the suspect was being interrogated.
