HYDERABAD, March 16: Lawyers’ fraternity continued their protests and token hunger strikes throughout Sindh on Friday as a mark of solidarity with “non-functional” Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry.

Lawyers observed a token hunger strike outside civil courts building to resent action again the chief justice.

Not a single lawyer appeared before the court between 10.30 am and 11.30 am. However, they did appear in some cases after 11.30 am. A few cases were also heard in Sindh High Court Hyderabad circuit bench.

According to General Secretary of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA), Allah Bachayo Soomro, the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) had instructed the bar councils to observe strike for one hour till Friday besides staging hunger strikes.

JACOBABAD: Members of the DBA observed a token hunger strike and wore black armbands. They also hoisted black flags atop the DBA building.

Speaking on the occasion, Haji Anwar Ali Jakhrani, Sardar Khan Lashari, Ghulam Ali Rind, Abdul Razzaq Khokhar and others warned the government of continued protests till the removal of Musharraf government.

Lawyers of Kandhkot also boycotted the court proceedings and took out a rally from DBA office which culminated at tower road. Led by DBA Kandhkot President Rehmatullah Awan, they carried banners and placards.

Speaking on the occasion, Rehmatullah Awan, Deedar Bhangwar, Abdul Hakeem Bijarani, Tariq Mehmood Khoso and others said that how a commoner could feel secure in a country where the chief justice himself was humiliated.

SHIKARPUR: Lawyers continued their protest on the fifth consecutive day on Friday. They also condemned the attack on the office of a private TV channel by the Islamabad police.

MIRPURKHAS: Lawyers boycotted court proceedings and observed token hunger strike outside the bar office in the premises of sessions court. President of the DBA, Salahuddin Panhwar, Shamsuddin Shaikh, Aziz Memon, Ali Hassan Chandio, Asghar Channa and others condemned police brutality against the lawyers and demanded of the government to order an inquiry into the matter. Lawyers in Umerkot and Tharparkar also boycotted court proceedings and held protest meeting.

Meanwhile, leaders of MMA observed black day and took out protest rallies and staged demonstrations.

A big demonstration was held outside Madina Masjid after Friday prayers, which was led by Naib Ameer of Jamat-i-Islami Sindh, Dr Mumtaz Memon.

Speakers, including Mumtaz Memon, Maulana Abdul Hafiz, Ahsan-e-Illahi Mughal, Comrade Abdul Majeed Rajput and others condemned the action against the chief justice and demanded his immediate reinstatement. Black day was also observed in Mithi and Umerkot.

LARKANA: Condemning president’s action of rendering Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan non-functional, the lawyers affiliated with the higher and lower courts boycotted court proceedings, held general body meetings and took to the streets carrying black flags and wearing black armbands on Friday.

After marching on the main roads they assembled and staged a sit-in at Pakistan Chowk and delivered speeches.

Vehemently condemning president’s action, lawyers said it was a blow to the independence of judiciary and a well-thought move to suppress it.

They criticised police action against lawyers in Lahore and said the advocates of Larkana fully stood by the decisions of the Pakistan Bar Council.
