LARKANA, Feb 26: The district government of Larkana has decided to celebrate the centenary of Larkana from March 15.

Larkana Zila Nazim Khursheed Junejo announced this here on Monday.

The celebrations begins with the inauguration by Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro on March 15.

The Zila Nazim has appealed to well to do persons to contribute generously in the Account No. 3986 in the National Bank of Pakistan, Main Branch, Larkana.

He further said that all the officers of grade 16 and above will also contribute their one day salary.

Meanwhile, a meeting was held here on Monday under the chairmanship of the District Coordination Officer (DCO), Larkana, Mohammad Hashim Leghari, to review the arrangements and programmes for the celebration of the 100 years of Larkana district.

The meeting was also attended among others by the chairman of Coordination Committee of the Celebrations, Professor S. M. Yousuf who is also the Principal of Cadet College, Larkana, EDOs of various departments, Larkana Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Anwar Shaikh, representatives of NGOs, bankers, and concerned officials of federal as well as provincial departments.

On the occasion, the DCO said that Sindh Governor Mohammedmian Soomro will inaugurate the centenary celebrations of Larkana district on March 15, at Town Hall, Larkana. The governor will also lay the foundation stone of a tower on VIP Road, Larkana, being constructed as the ‘memorial’ of the one hundred years of Larkana. Larkana was given the status of a district in 1901.

The DCO said that a seminar would also be held on the subject, while the year 2002 would be celebrated locally as the “Larkana Centenary Year”.

He further told the meeting that “Larkana Gazetteer” would be published by the end of Dec 2002.—APP
