KARACHI, April 21: Two more suspects have reportedly been arrested in North Nazimabad for their alleged involvement in the killing of eminent religious scholar Allama Hasan Turabi and his nephew on July 14 last year.

Police suspect that the Bengali-speaking detainees were involved in the suicide attack on Allama Turabi, Sindh chief of the Tehrik-i-Islami and MMA Sindh vice-president, and his nephew, Ali Turabi, outside their house in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, sources said.

Police sources said Model Colony police on a tip-off raided a house in Moosa Colony and picked up the suspects. The police started investigation but had not registered any FIR so far, sources added.

Initial interrogation reveals that one of the suspects, Abu Qasim, is a cousin of the suicide bomber. He had arranged and provided the explosive-fitted jacket used in the attack.

During interrogation, they admitted their active role in the assassination attempt. They told the police that the bomber, clad in a robe used by religious scholars, was wearing a jacket containing explosives when he met Allama Turabi and blew up himself.

They revealed that they had earlier made an attempt on the life of the scholar in Abbas Town in April 2006 which he survived.

When contacted, SHO Model Police Mohammad Tariq Baig avoiding to give details said the matter was sensitive and inquiry was not mature enough to be disclosed. “The inquiry is going on under the direct supervision of high command and agencies,” he commented and said police kept on interrogating suspects in Allama Hasan Turabi blast case.

Five accused Mohammed Ameen, Sultan Mehmood, Mohammed Rehman, Moham-med Ashfaq Qureshi and Akbar Khan were earlier arrested for their involvement in the suicide attack.
