NAWABSHAH, April 28: Newly-appointed vice-chancellor of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Prof Noshad A. Shaikh said on Saturday that he had willingly accepted the responsibility as vice-chancellor and there was no pressure on him with regard to appointments in health department.

Talking to journalists after conferring degrees on 383 MBBS graduates at the 9th convocation of Nawabshah Medical College for Girls Mr Shaikh said that the governor had given him the task to fix problems at the LUMHS including the issue of fake admissions and appointments.

He said that the ordinance about Nawabshah, Chandka and Ghulam Mohammad Mahar Medical Colleges to become a constituent part of the LUMHS was with the chief minister and hoped it would soon be promulgated.

The secretary announced a cash reward of Rs15,000 for the first position and Rs10,000 for the second and third position holders and establishment of a Chest Ward in the NMC Hospital.

Principal of NMC Prof Ali Akbar Ghumro said in his speech that more than 5,000 students had graduated from the institution since its establishment in 1974.

He said that there was shortage of teaching staff in the college and the academic council members had unanimously passed resolutions for the affiliation of college with the LUMHS.

Mr Shaikh awarded 45 gold medals, three silver and three bronze medals to top position holders including Dr Amina Farooq who received 11 gold medals and Dr Sunita Namdev six gold medals.

Our Hyderabad bureau adds: The governor of Sindh on Saturday appointed Prof Dr. Noshad A. Shaikh as vice-chancellor of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) for a period of four years, said a notification.

A spokesman for LUMHS said that Prof. Shaikh had already taken over the charge of vice-chancellor of the university and left for Nawabshah to preside over the 9th convocation of Nawabshah Medical College for Girls.
