GUJRANWALA, May 5: PML Punjab women wing vice-president advocate Shakila Rana resigned from her office and the party membership on Saturday to express solidarity with ‘suspended’ chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
She criticised the government for “destroying the judiciary, media and other national institutions”. The chief justice, she said, always supported truth, pledging that the lawyers would spare no pains in fighting for the supremacy of law.
DEATH SENTENCE: The ATC handed down death sentence with Rs100,000 fine to murder convict Zahid.
The court, however, acquitted co-accused Maqsood, giving him the benefit of the doubt.
According to the prosecution, Zahid killed a Rangers sub-inspector, Irfan, and injured head constable Abdul Jabbar over property dispute in Saddar area on Aug 30, 2006.
WARRANTS: The district and sessions judge on Saturday issued the death warrants of convict Iqrar Husain of Mandiala Warriach (Cantonment) for his involvement in a murder case. The convict will be executed on May 24.
According to the prosecution, Iqrar killed Zafer Iqbal over an eve-teasing issue in 1998. The sessions court awarded him death sentence and the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the decision.
The president also rejected his clemency appeal.
WORKSHOPS: The livestock department has organised workshops for women in Gujranwala, Gujrat, Narowal and Hafizabad to inform them about treatment of cattle in their villages and houses.
