ATTOCK, May 6: The nine arrested activists of opposition parties have been shifted to the district jails of Mianwali and Jhelum for one month.

The police had arrested these activists to restrict them from joining the caravan of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to Lahore on Saturday.

Those arrested included MMA’s Khwaja Ifitkhar, Haji Mohammad Hussain from Attock; Irshad Khan, Hazro; Malik Ghulam Yousaf and Bashir Nawaz of Jand; PPP Attock district president Sher Afzal Khan, Irshad Khan, Sultan Mehmood and PML-N’s Ismail.

After detaining them at the respective police stations, Khwaja Iftikhar, Sher Afzal Khan and Mohammad Ismail were sent to the district jail Mianwali, while the remaining six activists were shifted to the district jail Jhelum.

It may be noted that PPP Attock’s general secretary Dr Naeem Awan, PPP Hazro chapter president Naseer Khan Jadoon, PPP youth wing Hazro chief Zahid Mir and general secretary PPP Hazro tehsil Masood Mir are already under one month’s detention at district Jail Jhelum since April 23.

Meanwhile, local opposition leaders and lawyers have condemned the arrest of political activists and demanded their immediate release.

GUJAR KHAN: Political activists of different opposition parties arrested during the last two days in connection with the reception of the chief justice of Pakistan have been set free.

According to police sources, those who were freed on Saturday night and Sunday morning included ex-MPA Khalid, PPP district president Abdul Aziz, Jamaat-i-Islami local deputy chief Zafar Mahmood Dar, MMA leaders Syed Mohammad Mohsin Zaidi, Sufi Mohammad Aslam of Dariala Jalib tehsil Pind Dadan Khan, Faiz Ummar Advocate of Pind Dadan Khan Bar Association, Syed Sakhawat Hussain Shah, president PPP (PP-27 constituency), Syed Mustafa Bukhari, president PPP (PP 24 Sohawa) and PML-N Haranpur tehsil leader Raja Najabat.

ROAD BlockADE: A large number of commuters had to face problems as local police blocked the GT Road, at various points for few hours on Saturday, to prevent lawyers and political workers from joining the Chief Justice’s rally and participate in the Lahore Bar Association’s reception.
