PESHAWAR, May 6: Syed Qamar Abbas, a former provincial minister and senior vice-president of the People’s Party Parliamentarians, NWFP, was shot dead here on Sunday.

Mr Abbas was going on a motorcycle with one Akhunzada Mohammaed Ali when some people opened fire on them near Hashtnagri Chowk. Both of them were wounded and taken to the Lady Reading Hospital where they died.

Mr Abbas was nominated in a case about the death in an election clash about 10 years ago of Shabbir Bilour, son for Awami National Party leader Ghulam Ahmed Bilour.

Mohammed Ali was son of Tehrik-i-Jafria Pakistan leader Akhunzada Anwer Ali who was shot dead four years ago.

Local leaders of the PPP, including MPAs and councillors took the bodies to the GT Road and staged a protest.

Federal Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and Pakistan People’s Party (Sherpao) leader Sikander Sherpao condemned the assassination of Mr Abbas.

In a statement, they said the incident was indicative of the deteriorating law and order situation in the province.

They demanded that the NWFP government should take immediate steps for peace and security.
