HARIPUR, May 31: President of the District Bar Association (DBA) Nawaz Khan Swati has expressed reservations over the security arrangements for Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry’s visit to Haripur on Saturday.
The chief justice will be received by a procession Mr Swati termed historic, and will include cavalcades of vehicles and camel riders to offer a traditional welcome.
He will then be taken to the bar room for a lunch hosted in his honour by the DBA.
Before his arrival, on June 1, a motorbike rally, a procession of torchbearers and a mushaira will be held in Haripur to mark the occasion.
Mr Swati told Dawn that he had written to the District Coordination Officer, the District Police Officer Haripur, and the provincial government requesting that citizens’ security be ensured.
But, he said, that the plan devised by the security agencies was unsatisfactory.
He said that “in case of a mishap, the responsibility will lie with the local administration and the district government.” He added that he had also requested the Tehsil Municipal Administration Haripur to ensure cleanliness in the city and an uninterrupted water supply.
Haripur’s legal fraternity, political activists and residents are set to accord a rousing welcome to Chief Justice Chaudhry, who will be accompanied by Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) chief Munir A. Malik, Hamid Khan, and vice president SCBA, advocate Saeed Akhtar Khan.
After the lunch, the chief justice will leave for Abbotabad, where he will be received at the High Court Bar Council by Chief Justice Peshawar High Court Tariq Pervez Khan and other people.
Chief Justice Chaudhry will address the members of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) Abbotabad and attend a dinner hosted by the organisation.
