SANGHAR, July 15: Hundreds of people, majority of them Christians, took to streets on Sunday in protest against police after some muggers killed a youth and injured his companion during a motorcycle-snatching bid near Bajwa Manzil.

Raising slogans against police and demanding arrest of killers the protesters carried the body of Raheel Masih to Bacho Badshah Chowk and burned tyres on the road.

The protesters, including Sardar Masih, Farooq and Riaz Masih, said that they had no enmity towards anybody and Raheel’s killing was a stark example of deteriorating law and order. Incidents of robbery, motorcycle snatching and theft had become the order of the day because police were hands in gloves with the criminals, they charged.

They said that dozens of motorcycles were snatched every month in the district but people had now stopped reporting it to police. They preferred to get back their bikes after payment of money to the robbers, they said.

TPO Abid Qaimkhani rushed to the road block and persuaded the protesters to lift the blockade on assurance that the killers would be arrested within 24 hours.

Later, the body was moved to the Sanghar Civil Hospital for post mortem while the injured was shifted to Nawabshah as his condition was stated to be serious.
