SUKKUR, July 21: The Sukkur Regional Police Officer (RPO) Mohammad Bachal Sangri on Saturday urged the tribal elders to play their role in resolving bloody feuds, which had plagued the district’s peace.

If the elders played their role positively, the warring tribes could be reconciled and this would greatly contribute to improving law and order situation, he said while talking to a delegation of elders at his office on Saturday.

He said that police would continue to persuade civil society to help eliminate this scourge. The long running feuds badly were telling upon economy and illiteracy was the main reason behind them, he said.

The official said that Sukkur police had chalked out a comprehensive strategy to eliminate extremists and anti-social elements and the IGP of Sindh had already announced a policy of intra-district transfers and postings of police officers to ensure law and order.

He said that jobs in the police department had been advertised and claimed that appointments would be made purely on merit. He directed the DPOs of his region to persuade tribal elders to help resolve disputes in a peaceful manner.

MIDWIVES, July 21: Executive District Officer (Health) Dr. Agha Ashfaque Ahmed Pathan said on Saturday that the Sindh Health Department would train at least 2,000 midwives and give them substantial stipends under the government's Maternal and Child Health Programme.

He said that the midwives would be paid Rs3,500 stipend for the 18-month training course. Rural areas of the country badly needed more maternal and child health centres to avert rising rate of mortality, he said.

The EDO said that the programme would bring a significant change in the lives of people living in rural areas and they would have all the health facilities available near their homes after the centres had been established.—APP
