HYDERABAD, July 23: The Sindh National Front has ‘condemned callous attitude’ of the government to flood-affected people of the province and said that one month has passed to the flood but the government has failed to provide adequate relief to the victims.
A meeting of the executive committee of the SNF was held here on Sunday to discuss the prevailing situation in the country and Sindh, particularly the flood situation. The acting chairman of the party, Allah Warayo Soomro, presided over the meeting which was attended by its vice-chairman Amir Bux Bhutto, general secretary Gul Mohammad Jakhrani, deputy secretary (information) Ayoub Shar, Abdul Latif Bughio, Dr Roshan Pechuho, Khadim Hussain Unnar and others.
The meeting observed that the rulers just paid visits to the affected areas on helicopters and in motorcades only for the sake of publicity but did almost nothing for the flood victims.
It said that the government was providing protection to the culprits of May 12 Karachi killings. It alleged that the government was an enemy of Sindh and Sindhis and demanded its immediate winding up.
The meeting hailed the Supreme Court decision of reinstating Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, and said that it was for the first time in the history of Pakistan that the apex court had upheld its honour and raised a judicial bulwark against military dictatorship. It added that the government, after the historic decision, had lost the moral right to remain in power.
The meeting accused the government of resorting to pre-poll rigging by dividing districts, talukas and constituencies.
Lashing out at the People’s Party Parliamentarians for its duplicity, the meeting observed that while the democratic, progressive, nationalists and even religious parties had stirred hope among the masses by taking part in the London multi-party conference, the PPP had exposed itself as an opportunist and anti-people party.
The SNF body was of the considered opinion that the outdated federal system had failed to deliver the goods. It called upon the people to strive for a new constitution based on the 1940 Resolution.
It condemned the loss of lives in recent suicide attacks, Lal Masjid crackdown and ongoing operations in Waziristan and Balochistan and accused the government of implementing American agenda. It said that an Iraq-like situation had been created in the country and urged the government to review its domestic and foreign policies.
It said that the people of Sindh should dispassionately consider whether the PPP leadership was pro or anti-Sindh, keeping in view the fact that the party was prepared to form a coalition government with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
Sindh Relief Commissioner Syed Anwar Haider has called upon philanthropists to generously contribute to the President's Relief Fund for Flood Victims to help the government provide assistance to the displaced people.
In a statement, he said that a vast area of Qambar-Shahdadkot and Dadu districts had been affected due to flood and thousands of people had been displaced.
The relief commissioner requested the interested donors to submit donations in Sindh’s government and scheduled banks in Account No.990152-6 for donations in US dollars and in Account No.294-2 for donations in local currency.
He said that in case of any difficulty, donors may contact Emergency Response Centres on telephone No. 021-9202630 and 022-9200569.
