MNV drain develops more breaches

DADU, July 23: Five more breaches occurred in the Main Nara Valley (MNV) drain in Khairpur Nathan Shah and Johi talukas and another breach in Sim Nala in Mehar taluka on Monday.

As a result of these breaches, hundreds of acres of agricultural land and many villages were submerged by the gushing water. Irrigation officials, army personnel and local people were seen plugging the breach which continued till the filling of this report.

Reports said that flood water of Balochistan and Qambar-Shahdadkot has damaged more points of the embankment of MNV drain.

A 50-foot wide breach occurred at Kumb village where 12 villages and hundreds of acres of agricultural lands were inundated in Khairpur Nathan Shah taluka.

Residents of the Shahi Leghari, Lal Bux, Khan Leghari, Bhurgari, Gharo Bajhi Khan and Kumb villages were the worst sufferers.

Water was heading towards other villages which was developing pressure at embankment of Johi branch near Khanpur.

An affected grower of the area, Amir Bux Kalhoro, said that over 1,000 acres of agricultural land, including paddy and vegetable crops were inundated.

He alleged that the breach had occurred due to negligence of MNV drain officials.

A similar complaint was lodged by another grower Mian Ghulam Haider Abbasi of Khanpur.

An engineer of FP Bund, Habibullah Kabooro, said that water level of Manchhar Lake has touched 112.75 feet RL and irrigation officials were releasing 6,500 cusec of water into Indus River to reduce pressure on embankments.

However, flood water of Balochistan was developing pressure at RD-135, RD-115, RD-70 and RD-50 of flood protective bund in Dadu district.

Due to rain in mountainous range late on Sunday night, seven feet of water was flowing in the Nai Gaj Nala.

Three breaches occurred in Sim Nala due to increase in water level, inundating nine villages in Mehar taluka on Monday. These breaches of 50-feet each occurred at Waryaso, Khundhi and Allah Ditto Tiwano villages inundating hundreds of acres of agricultural land.

KHAIRPUR: A 50-foot breach developed at Naulakhi canal near Ghulam Hussain village in Sobhodero taluka on Sunday night, adds our correspondent.

Reports said that the breach occurred Cotton, maize, paddy and sugarcane crops spreading over 100 acres of land were inundated.

At least 25 houses, including a mosque of Ghulam Hussain Village also submerged in the water.

On Monday morning, villagers informed the irrigation officials and local administration who reached the spot to plug the breach.

The affected villagers said that breach occurred due to alleged negligence of irrigation officials.

JACOBABAD: A 30-foot wide breach occurred in Tajo Canal near Tangwani on Sunday night, inundating Bahram Khan Dahani, Khairuddin Dahani, Mehrullah Dahani and many other villages, reports our Jacobabad correspondent. Hundreds of acres of paddy crop were also destroyed.
