HYDERABAD, Aug 21: The 33 per cent representation given to women is a remarkable step taken by the present government which will place Pakistan soon in the list of developed states, said District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil.

He was speaking at a convention on ‘The role of female councillors and their responsibilities”, held on Monday under the aegis of district government and the Sindh Devolved Social Programme. It was attended by MPA Ms Farzana Saeed, women councillors of the UCs, taluka and district councils and senior SDSSP officials.

Previous governments denied representation to the 52 per cent population by confining them in homes which hampered the growth, said Nazim. Women representation was necessary as their involvement helps a nation prosper and progress, said Kanwar Naveed Jamil.

“Women’s involvement in local government is yielding results and councillors can play a dominant role by developing their areas,” he advised.

Regarding performance of local governments, Nazim informed of the activation of monitoring committees to deal in all matters with the final decisions to be taken on their recommendations.

He said, the SNEs for six new hospitals had been prepared and more than 100 schools were being converted into English medium to provide equal opportunities to the underprivileged students.

Project Director SDSSP, Qazi Abdul Kabeer presented a report of his organisation’s activities. The DCO Hyderabad Aftab Ahmed Khatri, MPA Farzana Saeed, councillors Ms Farhat Khan and Sajida Baloch,

Q. Mohammad Hakim and Ibrahim Qureshi also spoke on the occasion.
