QUETTA, Aug 22: The All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) adopted a resolution at a public meeting here on Wednesday, saying that it would never accept Gen Pervez Musharraf as president, either in uniform or without it.

Chaired by its convener Raja Zafarul Haq, the APDM public meeting warned the government that the people would mount a campaign if martial law or state of emergency was imposed.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Asfandyar Wali Khan, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Senator Sajid Mir, Dr Abdul Hayee Baloch, Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldini, Rasool Bakhsh Palijo, Sahibzada Abu Khair Zubair and Dr Qadir Magsi were the main speakers at the meeting held at the Sadiq Shaheed football ground.

The resolution said that to steer the nation out of the constitutional and political crises, the army should return to barracks as the Constitution did not allow the army and intelligence agencies to interfere in political affairs. It demanded restoration of the 1973 Constitution to its position before October 12, 1999.

It said the formation of an interim government to supervise general elections under an independent election commission was a prerequisite for the restoration of political order and normality in the country.

The resolution said that re-election of President Musharraf through present assemblies would be unconstitutional, illegal and immoral adding that the

APDM would use all options, including tendering resignations from the assemblies, to stop the army ruler to get himself re-elected.

The meeting warned the government that if the elections were delayed the nation would plunge into a grave crisis that would be dangerous for the integration and solidarity of the country.

The resolution said to ensure transparency the participation of all political parties including the leadership abroad was necessary otherwise credibility of elections would be questioned.

Expressing deep concern over the prevailing situation in the country, the meeting said that ill-conceived foreign and domestic policies of the government had weakened the federation owing to denial of rights to the federating units and looting of resources of the provinces had developed a sense of deprivation amongst them.

The APDM rejected the construction of cantonments in Balochistan and the policy of resolving political issues of Balochistan and Waziristan through extra-constitutional methods. It demanded end to military operation in both the areas and asked the government to tackle these matters peacefully.
