HYDERABAD, Sept 8: The president of the Sindh chapter of People’s Party Parliamentarians, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, said on Saturday that Gen Pervez Musharraf would never be accepted as president in uniform and the party would not come to power through backdoor.
Talking to reporters after attending the divisional meeting of his party on Saturday, Mr Shah said that talks were going on with the government but nothing had been decided so far.
He said that his party believed in balance of power between the president and the prime minister, democracy and supremacy of the constitution and parliament.
He said that senior party leaders of all the provinces, Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas would meet on Sept 14, and announce date for the return of party chairperson, Benazir Bhutto.
He said that the chairperson would be accorded a warm welcome, which would far surpass the welcome accorded to her in 1986. The ARD was a political alliance whereas the Anti-Greater Thal Canal and Kalabagh Action Committee’s agenda was restricted to water issue.
Mr Shah said that Ms Benazir Bhutto was a great leader and she was holding talks with the government only for the sake of the country. The demands of his party were unambiguous, which pertained to the restoration of true democracy in the country and fair, free and transparent elections by an autonomous election commission under the supervision of an interim government.
He demanded that the ban on becoming prime minister for the third time should be lifted and opposed the arrest of Nawaz League and APDM workers in Punjab. Mian Nawaz Sharif should desist from criticising Benazir Bhutto and PPP.
He said that Asif Zardari was ill and he had gone to America for medical treatment. He would return at the time of elections and perform his role in the elections.
