PESHAWAR, Sept 23: Awami National Party’s only member in the National Assembly, Shahabuddin Khan, has sent his resignation from the assembly to the party leadership.

ANP’s secretary information Zahid Khan told Dawn on Sunday that party chief Asfandyar Wali Khan in a meeting had issued directives to the members of the national and provincial assemblies to submit their resignations.

Shahabuddin Khan was elected from the Bajaur Agency in by-election after the seat fell vacant when MNA Haroon Rashid resigned in protest of US attacks that had killed 80 people in Bajaur.

The secretary said the resignation was in line with the All Parties Democratic Movement’s decision to quite assemblies against the re-election attempt of President Gen Pervez Musharraf.

He said the party’s members of the NWFP Assembly had also submitted their resignations.
