KARACHI, Oct 1: The Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has finalised admissions of 580 students to the Dow Medical College, Sindh Medical College and Dr Ishratul Ibad Institute of Oral Health for its MBBS and BDS programmes starting on Oct 8.
Prof Rana Masood, who supervises the admission procedure, told APP here on Monday that the DUHS had mainly focused on merit based admissions at its constituent institutions.
“Under this arrangement 416 students have been granted admission to the MBBS and 34 to the BDS programme,” she said.
The number appears to be in addition to the 84 admissions to MBBS and 16 to BDS given under the self-finance scheme and another 30 granted on reciprocal seats under an arrangement with the Liaquat Medical College, Hyderabad.
Details of the total 580 admissions have been displayed on the DUHS website.
Dr Rana maintained that details about each and every candidate’s admission had been displayed after a process of document verification of the 750 students who had secured the highest marks in the DUHS entry test.
She said that the candidates had been placed in the colleges as per their score in the entry test and the marks secured in the intermediate exams.
The first 213 students being placed in DMC and SMC each were duly informed that the annual fee package for the merit seats was Rs24,150.
About the 84 admissions (42 each in DMC and SMC), she said the students given the admissions had clinched comparatively less marks and could be accommodated under the self-financing scheme for the fee was Rs300,000.
As for the 30 reciprocal seats, Dr Rana said: “Under an arrangement, selection of candidates for these seats is made by the Liaquat Medical College from among the students from Hyderabad and other parts of the province.”
Similarly, the DUHS makes selection of 30 students who may get admission at LMC on basis of DUHS approval.
“Under the streamlined process, the selected candidates are given admission immediately,” she said.
In reply to a question, she admitted that there were many students who would opt out citing their inability to afford the fee structure of the self-financing scheme or getting admission in an institution outside Karachi.
DIMCOP session
The Dow International Medical College for Overseas Pakistanis (DIMCOP), having a capacity of 100 seats, plans to start it academic session by the end of this month.
Sources in the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) told APP here on Monday that a few seats were still available at its international medical college and could be offered to local students willing to get admission.
“The fee structure and related expenses for the overseas and local students are the same,” the sources said.
Students seeking admission to the Dow International Medical College are required to pay $10,000 for the MBBS course.
The students are not supposed to appear in an entry test but a criterion based on the HSC score 1500/2400 has been set for the admission seekers.
NED admission schedule
The NED University of Engineering and Technology has announced its schedule for admissions in the academic session 2007-08.
The NED registrar, Javed Aziz Khan, said here on Monday that the NED’s admission policy would remain unchanged but 281 seats had been enhanced under the regular category and 39 under the self-financing scheme.
According to the registrar, with this addition the total number of seats available now is 1,587 under the regular category and 227 under the self-financing scheme. Admissions are also being offered in the newly-introduced polymer and petrochemical department (40 seats) and metallurgical department (70 seats).
The last date for the submission of admission forms is Oct 18. The pre-admission test will be conducted on the NED campus on Oct 21 at 10 a.m.
