GUJRANWALA, March 20: The district Nazim cancelled the contracts of motor vehicle and toll tax of Wazirabad tehsil here on Wednesday.

The Wazirabad tehsil council had auctioned the motor vehicle and toll tax contracts against Rs2 million without getting permission from the district council. District council Nazim Chaudhry Fiaz Ahmad Chattha on a complaint cancelled these contracts and directed the district council to call fresh tenders.

The district council forwarded the tender advertisement to the Punjab information department for publication in national dailies, but it refused to oblige on the ground that the district council was defaulter of Rs150,000.

BULLDOZED: A union council Nazim’s mansion was bulldozed by her rivals over an election row at Bhatti Bhango village here on Wednesday.

Widow Rehana Farrukh had purchased a piece of land at a cost of Rs200,000 from her uncle Sardar Muhammad and constructed the mansion on it. She won the union council Nazim’s seat with the support of her panel. On Wednesday, her political rivals came at her mansion and demolished it. After threatening her with dire consequences, they fled while firing in the air.

Police have registered a case against Baber, Shahid, Nadim, Shazab Ali, Ijaz and others and are investigating.

Qasim Zia: The Pakistan Peoples’ Party will participate in the March 23 public meeting in Mochi Gate, Lahore.

This was stated by Punjab PPP president Qasim Zia while speaking at a dinner hosted by PPP divisional coordinator Chaudhry Imtiaz Safder Warraich here on Wednesday.

He said the only solution to current crisis was free and transparent election after ensuring the participation of exiled political leaders. He urged the party activists to prepare for the general elections.

Former senator Safdar Abbasi, Punjab PPP secretary-general Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan, information secretary Naveed Chaudhry, ex-MPA Shah Nawaz Cheema and other former legislators of the division were also present on the occasion.

Later, Zia accompanied by other party leaders went to the central jail and met PPP city president Khalid Humayun who was involved in a murder case.

SURPRISE VISIT: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Gujranwala, chairman paid surprise visits to two dozen examination centres in Gujrat, Sialkot, Gujranwala and Mandi Bahauddin districts on Wednesday.

He expressed his dismay over the mismanagement at various centres.

RECOVERED: Dhulley police recovered the body of an unidentified woman from a drain here on Wednesday.
