GUJRANWALA, Oct 19: The district bar association has announced a three-day strike to mourn a midnight blast in a welcome rally of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto that has claimed 139 lives.

This was stated by DBA secretary-general Chaudhry Amir Munir Bagri while speaking at a bar meeting held here on Friday.

The meeting, presided over by bar president Ijaz Nazir Sheikh, in a unanimous resolution condemned the Karachi blast and demanded the arrest of those involved in the carnage.

Meanwhile, the human rights lawyers’ wing of the PPP also held a meeting under the chairmanship of Muhammad Muazzam and ripped to shreds the Karachi bloodshed.

Participants also offered fateha for those killed in the twin blasts.

SEALED: The district administration sealed four theatres and cancelled the licenses of drama producers on charges of objectionable dances and dialogues here on Friday.

Reports said that district coordination officer Ather Hussain Sayal received several complaints that some theatres were involved in spreading obscenity. After getting the reports confirmed from officials of the arts council, the DCO sealed Balawal, Shabistan, Anmol and Gujranwala theatres and cancelled the licenses of producers.

He also recommended the Punjab home secretary to place a ban on actresses involved in vulgar dances throughout the province.

AUTOMATIC METERS: The Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) will install an automatic reading meters to overcome incidents of electricity theft.

A company spokesman stated this in a press release issued here on Friday.

He said the company’s surveillance and control system would improve after the installation of these meters in all sub- divisions.

The spokesman said that these meters would shift data of meters to company’s online main service which would help save expenditures of petrol worth millions of rupees every month.
