HYDERABAD, Oct 23: The University of Sindh has decided to motivate the MPhil and PhD scholars in research activities by allowing them stipend, said the Vice Chancellor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, on Monday.

This was decided in a high-level meeting presided over by the vice chancellor and attended by the Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr Rafia Ahmed Shaikh, deans, directors of various centres and institutes and chairpersons of the departments, registrar, advisor Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) and controller of examinations.

The meeting in principle agreed to fix stipend for candidates enrolled in MPhil programme on their research performance basis. It was further decided that on account of stipend to MPhil scholars, funds would be arranged and the SU will request the HEC to provide financial assistance.

They also discussed the admissions in MPhil twice a year while the matter will be discussed in the next Academic Council meeting. It was decided to announce admissions in MPhil programme in the Institute of English Language and Literature from next year along with admissions in other institutes and departments.

The QEC, it was determined will be asked to monitor the academic activities regarding research towards MPhil and PhD programmes. The meeting while discussing matter of study leave problem facing college teachers registered for MPhil, decided to bring the matter to the notice of the education ministry and a copy will be sent to Governor Sindh.The VC while addressing the faculty members stressed on creating environment for research culture at the campus. He said every faculty member should adopt measures to improve quality of education and research, while the university would not compromise on quality.

He said we need to identify problems affecting the quality as it was of paramount importance. He said the university was providing ample facilities to promote research programmes, including additional faculty in institutes and departments.

He said university for the promotion of teachers from affiliated colleges had announced scholarship for them to MPhil programme.

Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dr Rafia Ahmed Shaikh, deans of faculties including, Dr M.Y. Khuhawar, Dr Anwar Ali Shah, Dr M. Qasim Bughio, senior scholars Dr Abida Tahrani, Dr M.Siddique Kalhoro, Dr Imdad Ismaili and others also took part in the discussion.
