NAWABSHAH, Oct 27: The local government system cannot be terminated or suspended during general elections as per the Constitution, said Sindh Minister for Local Government, Katchi Abadis and Spatial Development, Mohammed Hussain Khan.
He was addressing a press conference at the Circuit House on Saturday.
He said the local government system’s suspension or termination doesn’t arise before general elections as it was covered under Section 140-A of the 7th Amendment. However, this can be done only after making amendment in the Constitution which requires two-third majority, he added.
The Sindh government had approved Rs234 million for development projects of the Nawabshah town he said and added fire-brigades and tractor trolleys for 119 talukas of Sindh will be provided soon.
He said at least 54 katchi abadis of Sindh were leased, while work to regularise another 84 was under progress. He said work on water filtration scheme at a cost of Rs550 million, sewerage scheme for Rs340 million, and railway pass for Rs450 million will start soon in Nawabshah.
The minister said development schemes with the help of Rs10 million from the federal government, Rs45 million from the MQM’s MNA and Senator’s Fund, Rs9.9 million from the SDSSP Fund, and Rs281 million of the Sindh government were being carried out in the city.
He said the MQM was the only representative party of 98 per cent lower middle and poor class population of Pakistan and struggling against feudal lords and industrialists under the leadership of Altaf Hussain.
He said it was the leadership of Altaf Hussain that people of middle and poor class reached the assemblies and also elected as city, taluka and union council nazims, and governor. He said the party was serving the people and development works were being carried out on larger scale throughout Sindh, especially in rural areas without discrimination.
