ISLAMABAD, Nov 7: A senior US journalist, Arnold R. Isaacs, here on Wednesday gave a lecture on the “Role of Media in Democracy and the Election Process” at the National Univer-sity of Modern Languages (Numl).

Arnold R. Isaacs said it was the desire of the people to know about the facts relating to an event and it was the job of a journalist to accomplish the task.

He said the job of a journalist was to report without bias and in the correct perspective. He also lauded Pakistan’s media for its professional skills in this regard.

Mr Isaacs discussed at length the academic and professional aspect of journalism related to his own experience in this connection.

Later students put up a number of questions which were answered by the speaker. The function was jointly organised by the Departments of Mass Communications and International Relations. The function was attended by a large number of students and the faculty members of the university.

Arnold R. Isaacs has served as a reporter and an editor for the Baltimore Sun for more than 18 years, reporting from more than 40 countries. His work has also appeared in publications such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune and others.

“Skip” Isaacs covered the last three years of the Vietnam War and is the author of ‘Vietnam Shadows: The War, Its Ghosts and Its Legacy’ and ‘Without Honour: Defeat in Vietnam and Cambodia’ which was named as the “notable book of the year” by the New York Times and the American Library Association.

As an educator, Mr Isaacs has held teaching positions in the political science and communications departments of Towson University and Johns Hopkins University in the United States as well as institutions in Ukraine and China.—APP
