HYDERABAD, Nov 8: A lukewarm response was observed to the Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party’s strike call given to protest against the imposition of emergency, suspension of the Constitution, attack on judiciary, curbs on media and arrest of hundreds of lawyers and political activists, including the party chairman Dr Qadir Magsi, on Thursday.

A large number of party workers were arrested in different towns. Tando Mohammad Khan was the only town where complete strike was observed.

In Hyderabad, strike was observed only in Qasimabad taluka.

Reports reaching here from Nawabshah, Sanghar, Naushahro Feroze, Badin, Jacobabad, Dadu, Mithi and other districts said that no strike was observed there.

In Badin district, over a dozen party activists were apprehended.

However, a press release of the party claimed that strike was observed in many villages of Karachi and other towns of interior Sindh including Thatta, Matli, Talhar, Raju Khanani, Larkana, Ratodero and other towns.

It said that in some areas, police ordered businessmen to open their shops.

It claimed that 180 party workers, including the president of Taraqi Pasand Nari Tahreek, Sehr Rizvi and Amina Nizamani, were arrested and police conducted raids on the houses of the party activities.

Our Larkana correspondent adds: Responding to the STP call, a partial strike was observed in Larkana and Shahdadkot on Thursday against the imposition of emergency.

Police was on high alert in the city and patrolling in the area to avert any untoward incident.
