RAWALPINDI, Nov 13: The Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) and People’s Student Federation (PSF) have announced to jointly launch Pakistan Bachao Tehrik (Save Pakistan Movement) from Friday (Nov 16) calling upon students from all over the country to join their movement against the imposition of emergency rule.

Chief of IJT Pakistan Nasrullah Khan Goraya and President PSF Punjab Khalid Nawaz Bobi, in a separate statements issued here on Tuesday, said students of all universities and colleges had been mobilised to take to the streets against the military regime.

They said from Thursday, Nov 15, students in both public and private sector educational institutions would boycott their classes and wear black armbands till the resignation of Gen Pervez Musharraf as army chief and president of the country.

They said the movement against the government would also be joined by teachers, physicians, lawyers and civil society activists.

The movement has been kicked off from Punjab University Lahore, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad and International Islamic University and the exercise would be extended to all educational institutions across the country.

Student federations associated with political parties Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) have also given a call for staging protest demonstrations on Friday, Nov 16. The future course of the students’ action against the government would be read out after the Friday prayers.

They said the call would prove to be a welcome turning point in the country’s history, adding that a joint student union would be formed soon so that the maximum number of students and masses could be involved in the movement.

The People’s Youth Organization (PYO) has also supported the movement of students and has vowed to mobilise masses against the rule of “one man show.”

The student wings of opposition political parties also questioned the legitimacy of the Supreme Court judges who have undertaken oaths under the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) and demanded the restoration of the sacked judges.

Meanwhile, PPP leaders said the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q) was the main player behind the imposition of emergency rule in the country as it had given them a chance to prepare for the election campaign.

They demanded immediate release of all detained party workers, lawyers, politicians and civil society activists and observed that “the days of the rulers were numbered” after students took notice of the grave political circumstances.
