LAHORE, Nov 13: Imran Khan is expected to arrive at the Punjab University’s New Campus on Wednesday (today) to lead protests against the government after negotiations between Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) at the Punjab University resulted in an official invitation to him on behalf of the JI’s student wing, Islami Jamiat-e-Tulaba (IJT).

Salman, president of PTI’s student wing, told Dawn that PTI maintained a “good working relationship” with the IJT and that Mr Khan would arrive together with JI leaders Hafiz Salman Butt and Amirul Azeem at 11am. Salman said he feared Mr Khan would be stopped from entering the campus and may lead a protest on the street instead.

This statement was contradicted, however, by IJT Punjab University leader Muhammad Ayyub, who said there was no plan to take the protest off-campus as yet.

Salman said the PTI’s student wing had been in contact with students from universities around the city and he expected students from FAST, LSE, NCA and Kinnaird College to attend the protest at the Punjab University.

On Tuesday, hundreds of Punjab University students held an on-campus protest and formed a kilometre long human chain while raising anti-government slogans, waving placards and holding banners. —Staff Reporter
