LAHORE, Nov 16: PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto visited rights activist Asma Jahangir’s residence late on Friday night.
Both the women were released simultaneously from house arrest a night before.
It is believed that Ms Bhutto’s visit is aimed at seeking civil society’s support for the PPP in its anti-Musharraf campaign.
Ms Bhutto is also scheduled to visit the residence of incarcerated lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Chairperson Asma Jehangir said on Friday the movement of lawyers and civil society for the restoration of democracy could not be derailed despite excesses of the regime.
Lawyers were being treated like terrorists, said Ms Jehangir on the premises of the Lahore High Court Bar Association.
“This is simply unacceptable to us. We urge the media to highlight the police’s monstrous action inside the high court and torture of lawyers,” she said.
She urged political parties to realise the gravity of the situation and launch a movement on the pattern of the one being pursued by lawyers.
“We (lawyers) have launched our struggle on our own. We are not like political parties, which aspire for power and ministries,” she said.
