HYDERABAD, Nov 25: The Joint Action Committee, an alliance of a number of NGOs, announced on Saturday that it would observe a black day across the province on Monday as part of its campaign against the imposition of emergency.
The committee’s coordinator Zain Daudpoto, Comrade Ramzan Memon, Punhal Sario and Dr Khalil Kazi said at a news conference at the press club that the basic objective of the committee was to raise voice against the violations of fundamental human rights.
With the imposition of emergency the basic human rights had been suppressed and the law enforcers had launched a crackdown on civil society, the committee said.
Mr Daudpoto said that the emergency had harmed the country’s interests and the Commonwealth had suspended the membership of Pakistan.
He also said that the emergency had been imposed just to protect one man. All state institutions had been rendered totally ineffective.
Gen Musharraf had tried to portray himself as a moderate ruler but for all practical purposes, he had emerged as a dictator.
He said that judges of the superior judiciary had been humiliated, media had been suppressed and hundreds of political activists, lawyers and journalists had been arrested.
He said that it had now become duty of every individual, groups and parties to rise to the occasion and struggle for the restoration of fundamental human rights.
He said that the committee would observe a black day throughout Sindh on Monday and commemorate the world human rights day on Dec 10 in a befitting manner.
