Eight killed in Afghan blasts

KABUL: Two separate Taliban-type bomb blasts blew up vehicles in Afghanistan on Monday, killing four Afghan soldiers and four civilians, officials said. Afghan police said meanwhile that US soldiers had mistakenly shot dead a policeman late on Saturday but the international forces here did not confirm the shooting. One of the bombs was planted on a dusty road used by Italian military forces on the outskirts of the capital Kabul and tore apart a car, killing four Afghan civilians, security officials said.

Gen Zalmai Uriakhail, a city police chief, said the four men were local farmers and it was unclear why their vehicle had been targeted. The bomb appeared to have been remotely detonated, he said.

Meanwhile, in the province of Ghazni, police said that US soldiers had mistakenly opened fire on a police post last Saturday, killing one policeman.

“After checking his ID card and realising he was a policeman, they threw the ID card on the body and drove away,” provincial police chief Khan Mohammad alleged.—AFP
