KASUR, Dec 2: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has said that boycott of the elections will be effective only if all opposition parties stay away from the polling.

Addressing a public meeting on Sunday at Phoolnagar, he said he would meet Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto to persuade her to boycott the elections. “I will ask BB to boycott the polls for the sake of Pakistan.”

The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) leader said history would not forgive the opposition and the civil society if they failed to launch a joint struggle for the revival and independence of the judiciary.

Criticising President Pervez Musharraf, he said there was no rule of law in the country and it was on the verge of destruction because of his flawed policies.

He said Gen Musharraf had imposed martial law twice and judges had been detained for the first time in the country’s history.

He said all institutions, including judiciary, had collapsed. He said the sovereignty of the country was in danger and any compromise with the PML(Q) was out of question.

Earlier, the local PML(N) leadership presented a resolution to Mr Sharif calling for review of the decision to boycott the elections.
