NAKHON RATCHASIMA (Thailand), Dec 8: Vietnam’s Truong Thanh Hang broke her second Southeast Asian Games record in two days when she won the women’s 800 metres on the track Saturday.

Winning the 800 in 2.02.39 ahead of compatriot Vu Thi Trang and Myanmar’s Myint Myint Aye, Hang added to her Friday’s victory in the 1,500 metres. Hang’s was one of three Games records set in athletics Saturday.

Indonesia’s Triyaningsih smashed the women’s 5,000 metres record to win in 15.54.32, taking almost 15 seconds off the old mark.

And in the men’s hammer throw, Arniel Terrera of the Philippines set a new record of 60.98 metres, extending his old mark by 51 centimetres.Hosts Thailand dominated the first day of track and field, but it was a more even spread of gold medals on Saturday.

Vietnam was best with four: Hang, Van Huyen Vu in the decathlon, Dinh Cuong Nguyen in the men’s 800 metres and defending champion Bui Thi Nhung in the women’s high jump.

Terrera’s win was one of three for the Philippines, along with Rene Herrera who knocked seven seconds off his season best in the men’s 3,000-metre steeplechase, and Marestella Torres, who claimed the women’s long jump with her last leap.

Indonesia collected two golds thanks to Triyaningsih and Dwi Ratanawati in the women’s discus.

Malaysia won its gold by holding on to win the men’s 4x400-metre relay in a blanket finish ahead of Thailand and the Philippines, with the medallists separated by just over half a second.

Thailand won its only athletics gold of the day in the women’s 4x400.

The hosts won gold in weightlifting as Suda Chaleephay took the women’s 53-kilogramme class.

Indonesia’s Eko Yuli Erawan won the men’s 56-kilogramme class after Vietnam’s Anh Tuan Hoang failed in his last two attempts for a golden lift in the clean and jerk.

In rowing, Thailand took gold in both the men’s and women’s lightweight double sculls while Phuttaraksa Nikree triumphed in the women’s single sculls.

Indonesia won the women’s lightweight four, Vietnam came first in the men’s pair and the men’s double sculls was won by the Philippines.

Michelle Bruzola of the Philippines defeated compatriot Harlene Orendain to win the women’s individual epee in fencing.

Vietnam’s Thi Giang Ngiem won the women’s 55-kilogramme freestyle wrestling and Fahrain Syah of Indonesia won the men’s 74-kilogramme event.
