ISLAMABAD, Dec 25: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has expressed concern over what it alleged, lapses in security arrangements for its chairperson, Benazir Bhutto, and asked the interior ministry to provide “fault-free” jammers and a technician to guard against any possible attack.

Dr Rehman Malik, the security adviser to Ms Bhutto, through a letter has informed the government that the jammers provided by the

Sindh police for Ms Bhutto’s Larkana visit on Dec 23 did not work.

In the letter to the interior secretary, Dr Malik wrote: “I regret to inform that the jammers provided by Sindh police to cover the movements of Ms Bhutto on 23-12-2007 did not work, which is a serious lapse in the light of serious security threat already conveyed to us by Brig Javed Iqbal Cheema, the director general of the National Crisis Management Cell of the Ministry of Interior.”

Rehman Malik further said that the jammers provided for the protection of the PPP chairperson during her trip to Rahim Yar Khan on Monday had also failed to work, exposing Ms Bhutto to a “high risk”.

“We would, therefore, like to draw your attention towards the fact that we have made repeated requests for provision of proper fault-free jammers for the protection of Ms Bhutto, but in every trip the jammers have failed to work.”

The People’s Party leader asked the interior ministry to contact Maj (retd) Imtiaz for delivery of “fault-free” jammers.
