THATTA, Dec 26: In the wake of growing incidents of lawlessness during electioneering and changing public mood, some political circles in Thatta have recommended that one National Assembly and three Provincial Assembly constituencies should be declared sensitive and polls should be held under the supervision of Army.

In NA-237 (Thatta-I), PPP has fielded Dr Abdul Wahid Soomro, who had contested 2002 general elections. Dr Soomro, despite the declining graph of the PPP due to their party chairperson’s self-exile and constant grip of their rivals — the Shirazis — bagged slightly over 54,500 votes as against his rival PML-Q affiliated candidate, Syed Ayaz Ali Shah Shirazi, who bagged 58,000 votes. This time, the party’s morale is comparatively high.

Ms Benazir Bhutto is leading the party campaign and a number of tribes, i.e. the Panhwars, Dars, Nahiyos, Shoras and Thaheems have recently joined the PPP in Thatta.

After a number of firing incidents and growing desperation among people it is now required that the constituency should be declared sensitive.

On PS-84, Abdul Jalil Memon is fielded by PPP against Syed Fayaz Shah Shirazi of PML-Q. PS-85 is PPP’s Sassui Palijo’s constituency. She is contesting against Amir Hyder Shah Shirazi. On PS-87, PPP candidate and a former Leaguer Ghulam Qadir Malkani has flexed his muscles against his cousin and Shirazi group candidate former state minister, Mohammad Ali Malkani.

All the three PPP candidates through their complaints to authorities had already warned against the bloodshed, citing incidents of lawlessness.

They had demanded of the authorities to replace the police head and other election supervising staff in these constituencies.

DARS JOINS PPP: Shabbir Dars, the young manufacturer of a highly reputed soft drink, has joined PPP here on Tuesday.s
