RAWALPINDI, Dec 28: A team formed to investigate the assassination of Pakistan People’s Party chairperson Benazir Bhutto visited the site at the Liaquat Bagh here on Friday and collected some evidences.

The team comprised Additional Inspector General of CID Abdul Hameed, DIG Mushtaq Sukhaira, SSP of Region III Waqar Choohan and SP Investigation Tahir Ayub.

An FIR has been registered under the anti-terrorism act and explosives act against unknown persons with the City Police on the complaint of its SHO.

The FIR, which has been sealed, said that an unidentified person appeared on the scene from outside the gate, opened fire and then blew himself up.

A senior police official told Dawn: “First the attacker fired 3 to 4 bullets and then he exploded himself.”

He said nothing was found from the blast site except for a pistol with its magazine. He said it was being investigated whether it belonged to police or to someone else.

A security source said Benazir’s vehicle was damaged from one side with flying pallets and its tyres burst when the suicide bomber struck.

Meanwhile, the Rangers have been called out in Rawalpindi to control law and order after more than six people were injured and public property was damaged in violence.

District Coordinating Officer Irfan Elahi said that Rangers would be deployed early Saturday morning.

The death toll in the attack rose to 24 as a policeman identified as Niaz died in the District Headquarters Hospital on Friday.
