HYDERABAD, Jan 3: President of the PPP Hyderabad division, Makhdoom Jamiluzzaman, has announced the formation of a 33-member legal aid committee to defend PPP leaders and activists implicated in false cases.
He said that investigation into PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s murder should be conducted in the light of the demands made by the party leadership.
He was briefing journalists on decision taken at a meeting of the divisional chapter of the PPP executive committee here on Thursday.
Terming Ms Bhutto’s assassination an attack on Pakistan’s integrity and solidarity, he said that Sindh was still bleeding and wounds inflicted on Oct 18 were still fresh.
He said that the executive committee had endorsed the demands of the party’s central executive committee.
Condemning the registration of cases under anti-terrorism laws against party workers, he said that the legal aid committee would be headed by Allah Bachayo Soomro.
He said that party workers had been asked to send copies of their FIRs to Mr Soomro or the party’s district president concerned.
He said that the party would hold a commemorative meeting in Hyderabad on Jan 8, followed by similar meetings at the union council and taluka levels in every district. Denying the involvement of the party cadre in the violence, he said that no party member was involved in damaging government or private property or looting.
He said that policemen were trespassing into party workers’ residences and political opponents were using police because they had their own axes to grind.
He said that cases were still being registered and the exact number was not available.
