HYDERABAD, Feb 17: The president of the Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah on Sunday expressed concern at delay in announcement of support price for wheat and demanded that the government should fix the minimum price at Rs700 per 40 kilogramme.

Mr Shah said at a meeting of the chamber that the harvesting of wheat had already started in the province but the government had still not announced support price.

If the support price was not fixed at Rs700 per maund, growers would have to bear huge losses because they had purchased fertilisers at very high rates, he said.

The meeting demanded that Keenjhar and Haleji lakes should be merged and their level should be raised to increase their water storage capacity.

The storage capacity of Loonikot, Tarachhri, Bakar Shah and Kalanghar ponds should also be raised and tube-wells should be installed on the banks of Rohri and Khirthar canals and Akram wah and Nara canal, the meeting suggested.

The meeting demanded that the traders and dealers, who were involved in the adulteration of pesticides, should be arrested and awarded deterrent punishment.

MINISTER: Caretaker Sindh Minister for Population Welfare and Women Development Ms Nadra Panjwani said on Saturday that her ministry would advance interest free loans of Rs30,000 each to the poor women under its microfinance scheme to help alleviate poverty.

She urged women to send their handicrafts to expo centre and other exhibitions where their finished products would be put on display free of cost and would be able to fetch competitive prices.

She said that the ministry would impart training to the representatives of NGOs in Hyderabad to enable them to perform an effective role in the development of society.

Later, the minister visited women’s jail and made inquiries about facilities being provided to women prisoners.
