KOHAT, April 15: Lal Badshah, a notorious proclaimed offender, was shot dead on Monday in an encounter, which also claimed the life of ASI Mahboob ur Rahman.

The encounter took place in Gumbat, 35km from here, on Rawalpindi Road.

The fugitive, a resident of Karak,had been wanted in several cases of highway robberies. He killed Hussain Shah and injured his wife, Ziarat Bibi, after molesting their minor son on Sept 10, 2000.

After the murder Badshah operated a gang that looted travellers on Rawalpindi Road. The gang gained refuge on the border between Gumbat and the Kohat frontier region.

The Senior Superintendent of Police, Usman Zikria, told newsmen in his office on Monday that after receiving a tip-off about the presence of the PO in the area, he had constituted a party led by ASP Nisar Tanoli.

The police party raided a hujra at 3am in Toray Stanay village and during an exchange of fire between the police and Lal Badshah, ASI Rehman was shot in the head and died instantly. The police stormed the house, where Badshah was using women as a shield, and killed him on the spot.

The police recovered a Kalashnikov and a false beard that the PO used to hide his identity.

The Senior Superintendent of Police said that the deceased ASI’s family would be compensated with Rs 500,000. In addition, the police department would cover the costs of education of his children.
