Zuhair shocks Vinod in tennis

KARACHI, March 19: Unseeded Zuhair Raza pulled-off a major upset when he sent top seed Vinod Das packing on way to making it to the men’s singles last four in the third Sindh ranking tennis tournament at the Beach View Club on Wednesday.

Playing his second match of the day he prevailed 6-2, 6-3 over his opponent who was senior to him in age as well as experience.

Earlier in the day Zuhair, seeded top in juniors, kept his winning run intact with a 6-0, 6-0 short work of Muhibullah to enter the last eight.

Second seed Asfand Rauf, Mohammad Abdul Saeed and Robin Das joined Zuhair in men’s singles semis.

Men’s singles quarter-finals: Syed Zuhair Raza bt Vinod Das 6-2, 6-3; Mohammad Abdul Saeed bt M. Naeem 6-3, 6-3; Robin Das bt Fahim Ramzan 6-1, 6-3; Asfand Rauf bt Syed Abbas Raza 6-0, 6-3.

Boys’ under-15 singles pre quarter-finals: Yayha Essa bt Nasrullah 6-0, 6-0; Muntazrain bt Hasan Ansari 6-0, 6-1.

Juniors’ under-17 singles pre quarter-finals: Syed Zuhair Raza bt Muhibullah 6-0, 6-0; Asadullah bt Sameer Tariq 6-3, 6-3.

Quarter-final: Mustafa Zaidi bt Sikander Hayat 6-4, 6-0.

Thursday’s fixtures:

Juniors’ under-17 singles, boys’ under-13 singles at 9.00am; juniors’ doubles at 11.00am; ladies’ singles at 12.00noon; men’s doubles 1.00pm.
