HYDERABAD, March 25: District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has laid foundation stones for the construction of three bridges on Akram Wah, Phulelli and Pinyari canals, which will cost a total of Rs180 million and take eight months to complete.

Mr Jamil said that at the foundation laying ceremonies on Monday that the existing bridges on the canals, which were 45 years old and narrow, had become an impediment to smooth flow of traffic.

He said that the district government undertook a detailed survey to solve traffic problems and decided to construct three wide bridges on the canals after witnessing the worst traffic jams due to old and narrow bridges.

He said that the district government had awarded contracts for the bridges to three separate contractors to ensure they would be completed within scheduled timeframe.

He said that work on the Rs900 million mega project of Ghangra Mori bypass had also been started. After completion of the projects, not only the traffic flow within the city would be regularised but the traffic coming from the interior of Sindh towards Karachi and from Karachi to Punjab would also be streamlined, he said.

He said that work was proceeding at a hectic pace on eight flyovers, five bridges and an underpass to complete the projects during current year and solve traffic problems,

City Taluka Nazim Javed Jabbar, project director of Hyderabad Development Project Syed Sarfaraz Ali Shah, chairmen of different district monitoring committees, a large number of union council nazims and councillors and office-bearers of different trade organisations were present at the stone laying ceremonies.
