SUKKUR, April 3: The government wants to promote a culture of reconciliation and decency without compromising on principles, said Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman, on Thursday.
The country and people had suffered immensely because of confrontational politics which made it essential for PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari to visit MQM headquarters in Karachi on Wednesday.
He wanted to explore opportunities for cooperation between two political parties for formulation of the Sindh government, she told journalists at the Sukkur Airport before departing for Naudero to attend Z. A. Bhutto’s death anniversary.
The PPP had a history of struggle for rights of peoples, she said while paying tributes to Benazir Bhutto for sacrificing her life for the cause of democracy.
She in reply to a question said complete unanimity in views among coalition partners was evident which were binding all in their struggle.
Main issues, she said were health, education, unemployment and terrorism which were on priority. She said terrorism was the biggest challenge and government was taking special measures to end it.
She hinted at holding of talks with stakeholders as many innocent lives had been lost and reminded that PPP always pursued positive policies during its tenures instead of going for confrontation and agitation.
Sherry Rehman said PPP believes in free judiciary and press recalling the government goal to repeal Pemra laws.
She lauded press for safeguarding freedom and promised that PPP and its coalition partners would ensure hurdle-free environment for print and electronic media.
She said fight against terrorism was in our interest and we want involvement of the masses for future safety.
“National consensus is our goal which made PPP hold negotiations with the MQM and hoped the talks would bear far reaching impact on the political horizon of Sindh.
JUSTICE: Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Farooque A Naik has said the government believed in providing quick and easy justice to people and in course of time courts will be established to hear cases in the afternoon and evening to clear backlog.
He said this while addressing a reception hosted by lawyers of Sukkur Shafqat Shah Masoomi and others at the Sukkur Airport on Thursday.
He said jails were overcrowded and slow court proceedings resulted in delay of cases for years. He said lawyers were the custodian of law, constitution and democracy and paid them tribute for their struggle over the year.
He recalled that Pakistan also came in being as a result of heroic struggle by a lawyer Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was also a lawyer who gave the country a constitution of consensus.
The minister said that he was concerned for the problems of lawyers and efforts will be made for professional improvement and government would establish lawyers’ academies in different parts of the country.
He said the issue of deposed judges was on priority and he was confident of achieving the 30-day deadline.
He said lawyers reciprocated which was a welcome sign because they had accepted our plea of resolving the issue in Parliament and hoped it will be resolved according to the Constitution.
The minister later left for Naudero to attend the death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
